Over dentures

People who have over dentures find themselves able to enjoy many of the foods they were unable to enjoy before - such as dry fruits and hard apples.

Over dentures also require very little maintenance, and can be treated basically as you would treat normal teeth. Natural teeth, healthyroots or implants may be utilized to support an over denture. Such an appliance is more stable than a complete denture and affords better comfort, function and aesthetics.

The over denture procedure:

Creating and applying over dentures takes about 3 visits.

  • Initial consultation is done in which oral examination is done and the procedure is explained to you. You can ask all your questions and express your concerns. Impression would be taken.

  • In subsequent visits, the implants will be placed. Several months will pass to let the jawbone grow in around the implants, creating a sturdy foundation for your over denture. During this period you can wear your dentures.

  • In the third phase, a connecting device is attached to the implants and the over denture will attach to this.

Cast Partial Denture

Guidelines for Denture Wearers

  • Food Selection Use soft food initially like chapatti/bread soaked with milk, cooked cereals, mashed soft cooked vegetables, patotoes. A void food that needs incision like meats, raw vegetables & avoid sticky food until experience has been gained.

  • Incision/Biting Insert for biting at the corners of mouth i.e. angle of mouth & use canine-premolar area. Push food back as it is incised.

  • Chewing Cut food into small pieces. Try to chew with some food on both the sides at the same time to stablise the denture. Be PATIENT & PRACTICE.

  • Salivary flow Mostly there is increase in flow of saliva, when a new denture is worn.

  • Speaking

    • Speak slowly.

    • Practice by reading a little bit loud at home, preferably in front of a mirror.

    • Repeat & practice words that seems the most difficult.

  • Sneezing /coughing, yawning There is always loss of retention during these movements, so always cover the mouth with hand or handkerchief during these movement.

  • Denture Hygiene Clean regularly after each meal by rinsing under running water. Brush the denture daily before sleeping.

  • Procedure

    • Grasp denture in palm of hands securely, but without a squeezing pressure because denture can be broken.

    • Hold the denture low in sink in which has been placed a towel, wash cloth or rubber mat spread over the bottom to serve as a cushion, if accidentally denture drops or the sink should be partially filled with water.

    • Apply water, non-abrasive soap & soft brush to all area of the denture. Then rinse thoroughly.

  • Precautions related to brushing

    • Plastic resin is easily abraded. Scratches made by overzealous brushing makes a rough surface & these surfaces become more subject to the collection of debris & calculus.

    • Danger of dropping & breaking the denture is increased when it is soaped, wet & therefore slippery.

  • Mucosa

    • Rinsing: Each time the denture is removed, the mouth should be rinsed with water. Before sleeping it is very important to rinse mouth thoroughly with warm water with a pinch of salt added to it.

    • Massage: Massage the Mucosa for stimulation of circulation & increased resistance to trauma. Place thumb & index finger over the ridge & apply massage with a press & release stroke. The palate should be rubbed with the ball of the thumb.

    • Rest: Tissues need to rest each day. It is preferable to leave the denture out while sleeping.

  • Storage of denture Sore Spots Store dentures in water in a covered contained & replace its water every day. Usually, your mouth will have a few "sore spots" after wearing the denture/partial for 24 hours. These areas can be relieved with very little effort during your next appointment. Massaging and stimulating those tissues will reduce the incidence of inflammation and sore sports.

Never expect the same efficiency as with the natural teeth

Success of a denture depends upon the learning ability of the user as denture is a device, which won't work itself, but it upon the user how to use it.

Denture are not permanent appliances. Dentures may need replacement periodically as tissues under the denture changes.

We have done our best to provide you with well-fitted, functional, and esthetic dentures/partials. We feel confident that after a few weeks of becoming adjusted to the new dentures/partials, you will have years of satisfaction from them.

Over time, your jawbone and gums shrink when there are teeth missing. When this occurs, your dentures/partials will feel loose and may require relining. Wearing ill-fitting dentures/partials for too long without refitting can cause severe bone loss and very serious oral disease. Please call our office if these symptoms occur.

Congratulations on happy birthday of your New Teeth. We all, from Dr. Kochar's Dental Temple pray to God that you enjoy your eating, bitting & Smiling, we mean
